Stryker launches innovative SmartHospital platform to transform digital care delivery

The SmartHospital Platform provides a digital infrastructure designed to integrate medical devices, clinical data, and healthcare personnel into a singular, adaptive ecosystem. This system addresses fragmentation in acute care by automating data flows and prioritizing clinical alerts across the patient journey.

Integration of clinical infrastructure
The platform functions as a digital backbone that connects physical medical assets, such as the ProCuity bed series and Prime Connect stretchers, to a centralized data environment. By establishing interoperability between these devices and the broader hospital network, the system tracks patient status across transport, treatment, and recovery phases. This connected infrastructure serves as the primary data source for the digital supply chain of information, ensuring that patient metrics are available to care teams without manual entry or data silos.

Reducing communication fatigue through intelligent workflows
To manage the high volume of notifications in clinical settings, the platform utilizes the Engage workflow engine. This middleware acts as an intelligent filter, routing and prioritizing alarms based on clinical urgency and staff availability. By analyzing contextual data from patient monitors and electronic health records (EHRs), the engine reduces "alarm fatigue"—a common factor in clinician burnout—by ensuring that only actionable notifications reach the appropriate team members.

Communication is further facilitated by the Sync Badge, a voice-activated, hands-free wearable device. This hardware enables immediate collaboration and includes dedicated emergency features, such as panic buttons, to enhance staff safety. The integration of these tools into the automotive data ecosystem of hospital logistics allows for more precise resource allocation and faster response times to critical patient events.

Virtual care and ambient intelligence
The system extends clinical reach through virtual nursing and monitoring workflows. These models allow remote clinicians to handle administrative tasks, such as admissions, discharge documentation, and routine rounding, via a virtual command center. By offloading these responsibilities from bedside staff, the platform enables on-site nurses to maintain a higher ratio of direct patient-centered care.

Furthermore, the platform incorporates ambient intelligence using AI-driven sensors and computer vision. These sensors monitor the care environment to identify potential safety risks or changes in patient behavior. This proactive monitoring approach surfaces insights in near-real time, allowing the environment to become responsive to patient needs without requiring continuous physical presence.

Deployment and technical roadmap
The SmartHospital Platform was presented in March 2026 ahead of the HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition. It represents the inaugural large-scale deployment from Stryker’s Smart Care business unit, which was established to manage the integration of acquired technologies from Vocera and care.ai. The platform is designed to scale with health systems as they transition toward fully digitized operational models, providing a modular framework that supports ongoing technological updates and process improvements.
