The AIM 9 is a high-speed inspection platform designed for the pharmaceutical industry to identify defects in vials, cartridges, and syringes containing liquid or lyophilized medications. By combining high-resolution camera systems with optional High Voltage Leak Detection (HVLD), the platform automates the identification of particulate matter and cosmetic container defects at speeds up to 600 containers per minute.

Modular Configuration for Complex Inspection Tasks
The technical relevance of the AIM 9 stems from its modular "building block" architecture, which allows manufacturers to customize the machine based on specific product requirements. The platform’s main module features a high-speed star wheel that rotates containers at speeds of up to 400 or 600 per minute, depending on the configuration. This rotation is essential for liquid products to set particles in motion, making them detectable by the Static Division (SD) sensors or camera-based systems.

For pharmaceutical manufacturers handling sensitive biologics or high-value medications, the ability to combine visual inspection and container closure integrity testing (CCIT) on a single footprint reduces the required cleanroom space and minimizes glass-to-glass contact. Visual inspection on the AIM 9 is executed through multiple stations that check for liquid fill levels, tip-cap presence, and the integrity of the aluminum seal or stopper. For solids, such as freeze-dried powders, the system utilizes specialized lighting and camera angles to detect surface cracks or localized meltback.

A critical component of the platform is the optional integration of an HVLD module. This module applies high-voltage electricity to the container to detect microscopic leaks or pinholes that could compromise sterility. Because the AIM 9 utilizes a pre-spin and a high-speed camera station, it achieves a high probability of detection for particulate matter, including glass, metal, and fibers, which is a requirement for compliance with international pharmacopoeia standards such as USP <790>.

Use Cases and Data Management
The application of the AIM 9 extends to high-throughput lines where pharmaceutical companies must balance speed with a low False Reject Rate (FRR). In a typical use case, a manufacturer producing insulin cartridges can utilize the system to detect both heavy particles that settle quickly and light particles that remain in suspension.
