What Sets Siemens Healthineers’ Magnetom Free.XL Apart in Interventional MRI?

A new generation of interventional MRI is emerging, driven by clinical demand for safer, radiation-free, real-time imaging during minimally invasive procedures. Siemens Healthineers positions the Magnetom Free.XL, a 0.55T MRI system, as a differentiated response to these needs, enabling improved guidance for interventional radiology, expanded use across challenging patient groups, and streamlined integration into interventional suites.

Interventional and Diagnostic Applications Enabled by 0.55T MRI
Interventional MRI is increasingly used to guide minimally invasive procedures in complex anatomical regions, benefiting from superior soft-tissue contrast without ionizing radiation. The Magnetom Free.XL is designed to strengthen this modality by improving device visibility, reducing metal-related artifacts, and mitigating heat effects—factors critical to safety and procedural accuracy. Beyond interventions, the system is positioned for diagnostic imaging in patient segments where conventional MRI may be limited, including pediatric, bariatric, claustrophobic, and pregnant patients.

Differentiation Through System Design and Accessibility
A defining differentiator is the DryCool helium-independent design, which removes the need for a quench pipe and allows greater flexibility when installing MRI inside an interventional suite—an area where traditional MRI systems often pose logistical barriers. Its 100 cm flared bore and optionally lifted magnet are intended to improve operator access, enhance ergonomics, and reduce fatigue during prolonged or sequential procedures. These features collectively seek to establish a more open and maneuverable interventional environment than conventional high-field MRI systems.

Technology Advances: Gradients, AI Reconstruction, and Real-Time Guidance
The system is expected to incorporate XL gradients and the Deep Resolve AI reconstruction platform, enabling high-resolution soft-tissue imaging as well as routine cardiac MRI at 0.55T—a capability that is typically challenging at low-field strengths. A complete coil portfolio, including form-adaptive and interventional coils, supports flexibility across procedures and imaging workflows.

For needle-based interventions, the myNeedle Companion software brings integrated 3D path planning, skin entry-point marking, and real-time navigation to MR guidance, aiming to consolidate planning and execution within a single interface.

Integrated iMRI Suite: A Combined Approach With Cook Medical
Magnetom Free.XL is designed as the central component of a new interventional MRI Suite jointly developed with Cook Medical. This collaboration blends Siemens Healthineers’ imaging technologies with Cook Medical’s longstanding expertise in interventional therapies and device design. The combined approach aims to streamline procedural workflows, create a coherent imaging-device environment, and accelerate the adoption of MR-guided therapies in clinical practice.

Workflow Integration and Daily Utilization
With the Nexaris Dockable Table, patient transfer between diagnostic, intraoperative, and interventional settings is intended to be seamless, reducing delays and minimizing repositioning errors. The system is positioned not only for interventions but also for full-spectrum diagnostic imaging outside interventional time slots. This dual function allows hospitals to maximize scanner utilization—a key differentiator in environments where MRI availability and cost efficiency are essential.

Positioning Within the Broader Image-Guided Therapy Portfolio
By adding interventional MRI to its existing image-guided therapy portfolio—spanning mammography, ultrasound, CT, angiography, and Varian oncology systems—Siemens Healthineers aims to deliver a more integrated therapeutic imaging platform. The Magnetom Free.XL is intended to become a strategic component within this ecosystem, enabling potential cross-modality synergies and supporting the shift toward personalized, minimally invasive treatment pathways.
