In operating theatres, intensive care units, emergency rooms and other particularly sensitive areas of a hospital where patients are treated, an unearthed power supply (medical IT system) is required in accordance with IEC 60364-7-710.

This is the only way to ensure that the power supply does not fail in the event of a first electrical fault and that important patient treatments are not unintentionally interrupted.

The prerequisite for an unearthed power supply is galvanic separation from the earthed power supply.

In addition, the feed into a medical IT system must always consist of two independent lines. A switching (changeover) device must therefore be provided which can switch between the general power supply and the emergency or safety power supply within a prescribed time.
