Inova Health System Implements SIGNA Sprint Elite 1.5T MRI

Inova Health System has become the first healthcare provider to implement the SIGNA Sprint Elite 1.5T MRI from GE HealthCare. Installed at Inova Fairfax Hospital, the system is designed to enhance high-resolution imaging performance at 1.5 Tesla (T) for cardiac, oncologic and pediatric applications, while improving patient comfort and accessibility.

High-Performance Imaging at 1.5T
The SIGNA Sprint Elite platform is engineered to extend performance capabilities within the 1.5T MRI category, one of the most widely deployed field strengths in clinical practice. By combining advanced gradient performance and integrated digital processing, the system supports detailed structural and functional imaging.

Built-in artificial intelligence technologies include:
  • AIR™ Recon DL, for deep learning-based image reconstruction
  • Sonic DL™, to accelerate acquisition workflows
  • AIR x™, to enhance image quality across complex anatomies
These technologies are intended to maintain high spatial resolution and diagnostic clarity, even in demanding cardiac and oncologic cases.

Advancing Cardiac Imaging
The MRI system is integrated with Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, supporting a specialized cardiac imaging environment. The platform is designed to assist clinicians in evaluating complex and often underdiagnosed conditions, including:
  • Cardiac amyloidosis
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • Heart failure
  • Microvascular dysfunction
High-resolution imaging combined with AI-assisted reconstruction can improve tissue characterization and functional assessment in cardiac MRI protocols.

Free-Breathing and Patient-Centered Design
The system supports free-breathing imaging sequences, reducing or eliminating the need for breath-hold techniques during scans. This is particularly relevant for pediatric patients, elderly individuals and critically ill patients who may struggle with traditional breath-hold requirements.

Patient comfort features include a 70 cm wide-bore design and flexible, blanket-like AIR™ Coils. The wider bore and quieter scanning operation aim to reduce claustrophobia and improve exam tolerability.

Imaging Patients with Implanted Devices
Operating at 1.5T, the system is well-suited for imaging patients with many types of implanted medical devices. Higher-field MRI systems may present compatibility limitations, whereas 1.5T platforms remain broadly accepted for conditional device imaging under established safety protocols.

Expanding Access to Advanced MRI
By deploying the SIGNA Sprint Elite, Inova Fairfax Hospital expands advanced imaging access for both inpatients and outpatients referred by community cardiologists and subspecialists. The combination of high-performance 1.5T imaging, AI-assisted reconstruction and patient-centered design supports more efficient workflows and broader eligibility for MRI diagnostics across cardiac, oncologic and pediatric care pathways.
